FOLLOW UP: VW SUFFERS COURT SETBACK

The Federal Court of Justice, Germany’s top court, has not accepted Volkswagen’s argument that their software was legal under EU law, so is not required to compensate owners. This is the first time this position has been challenged by a court. To read more click the Automotive News article here.

FOLLOW UP: EX-HONDA BOSS COMMENTS

The ex-boss of Honda UK, Philip Cross, has been asked for him thoughts on the announcement, from last week. This is an interesting read, from someone who until recently would’ve been part of the group that made the decision. To read more click the Autocar article here.

PSA GROUP ANNOUNCE PROFIT

Carlos Tavares, PSA Group Chairman, announced that the Group had made record earnings in 2018. The recurring operating income was €5.69 billion, a rise of 43 percent. This gave a 7.7 percent profit margin. Interestingly, Opel-Vauxhall also made a profit. EUROPEAN ANTITRUST PROBE

Der Spiegel has reported that an antitrust investigation has begun against Renault, Nissan, PSA Group, FCA and JLR over the price of car parts. Accenture, the consultancy group, are also being looked at. To read more click the Automotive News Europe article here.

BMW FINED FOR FAULTY ENGINE SOFTWARE

Germany’s prosecutor’s office has fined BMW €8.5 million for installing the wrong engine management software into 7,965 vehicles. To read more click the Automotive News Europe article.

BREXIT COULD COST MOTORISTS MORE

In this week’s Brexit news, CarWow has a new tool to predict the price of cars after a ‘No Deal’ exit. Essentially cars will cost more, with more expensive cars costing a lot more than less expensive ones, with ranges of 3 to 22 percent increases. NON EU FLAG LICENSE PLATES ONLY

After March 29, license plates displaying an EU flag will no longer be valid, therefore owners are being urged to get new plates in time. To read more click the Motoring Research article here.

BREXIT A DANGEROUS DISTRACTION WARNS SMMT

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has issued an update, stating that Brexit is distracting companies from the other issues in the global car markets. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, outlines the issues facing the automotive world. To read more click the SMMT article here.

MANDATORY SPEED LIMITERS AND DATA LOGGERS FITTED TO ALL NEW CARS

The European Transport Safety Council has announced that, amongst a raft of safety related proposals, mandatory speed limiters and data logging will apply to all new vehicles from 2021. SCOTTISH FACULTY OF ADVOCATES WARNS OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE SOFTWARE DANGERS

The Faculty of Advocates has, after the consultation, with the Scottish Law Commission and the Law Commission of England and Wales, warned of the issues of using software that cannot follow safety critical software processes. There will be no way to know what caused an accident nor why the vehicle made the “decision” it did by referring to the software. To read more click the Scottish Legal News article here.
