Episode 175: Gordian Knot - Porsche raided, Sunderland job losses, China removes protectionism, Gandini's greatest hits

FOLLOW UP: PORSCHE RAIDED

Porsche and Audi were raided last week, amazingly not on the same day as they were to report on their financial year.  A board member, someone from a senior management position and a former employee have been investigated. NEW EU REGULATORY LAW AFTER #DIESELGATE

The European Union has introduced a new law, in the wake of the #Dieselgate affair, to prevent a repeat. The European Commission will have more authority over car approvals. Manufacturers will be fined up to €30,000 per faulty vehicle, and be ordered to recall models, all via the EC. Added to that all software procedures must be disclosed. The chaps, though, are confused how this relates directly to #Dieselgate, as the vehicles met the previous testing regime. To read more click the Autocar article here.

NISSAN CUTTING JOBS IN SUNDERLAND

Nissan has announced that it is jobs at it’s Sunderland facility. Officially, the drop in demand for diesel is the reason. Recently Nissan has been hit hard by the drop in the UK new car market, however, Alan and Andrew discussed how a new Leaf model and older models were probably a large portion of that drop. CHINA REMOVING PROTECTIONIST POLICY IN 2022

China will stop the requirement for local joint-ventures if foreign companies want to produce cars in country. They are hoping this will lead to more investment as the limit of no more than 50% ownership will be removed as well. To read more click the Autocar article here.

AMAZON TO DELIVER TO CARS IN THE US

In the United States, you will be able to enable Amazon to drop parcels off into your boot without you needing to be there if you own a GM or Volvo. The chaps discuss this and are not really in favour of this. To read more click the Verge article here.

FORMULA E - PARIS

Formula E is back this weekend and will be coming from Paris. Do not forget that Channel 5 are currently showing live rugby on a Saturday afternoon so live racing can be found on 5Spike (Ch160 Sky, Ch152 Virgin, Ch54 Freeview, Ch133 Freesat) or Eurosport.

WRC IN ARGENTINA

WRC is also back this weekend, this time coming from Argentina. Should be another gruelling event, but Andrew hopes Citroën have a better time than the last event.

DUTCH ‘SINGING ROAD’ REMOVED

Following the installation of strips along a short stretch of road, that is meant to create a tune if driven over at the correct speed, local residents demanded the removal of the “psychological torture”. Two days after installation the strips were removed and the local residents could return to enjoying the noise of the local air force runway. To read more click the Jalopnik article here.

SILLY DRIVER GETS JAILED

The driver from North Yorkshire brought himself to the attention of the police by making rude hand signals to their mobile cameras, three times. The police discovered he had and used a laser jammer device, which he was sentenced for perverting the course of justice by blocking the ability for his speed to be measured.
