Episode 89 : Say Disruption - #Dieselgate, 2 Star Mustang, Paint Tax, EV Chargers at Petrol Stations

The chaps start the show, as they do nearly every week, with #Dieselgate follow up.

FOLLOW UP - GERMAN PROSECUTORS NAME WINTERKORN

After investigations and raids on properties in the last week, German prosecutors feel Winterkorn may have known about the defeat device software sooner than his declared timescale. He is now being investigated for fraud. This raises the number of people being investigated from 21 to 37. To read more click here.

FOLLOW UP - COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR CHIEF VW

Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt, who was poached from Daimler, shortly after the scandal broke. There appears to be a difference in opinion in what her role actually meant. Again, this is not a good headline for Volkswagen, as they keep going to great lengths to say how the culture is changing. To read more click here.

FOLLOW UP - MORE CLAIM COMPENSATION IN THE UK

A further 15,000 claimants have joined the compensation claim against VW, in the UK. The basis for their argument is that Volkswagen have misled over their environmental impact. The High Court proceedings will swing into action in October. To read more click here.

#BOOSTEDMANCHESTER

At the weekend, Alan and Andrew were in the same place at the same time, without a rift being torn in the space time continuum! They went to the inaugural #BoostedManchester event organised by, friend of the show, @AutoBant and Stadt Thechnik, in Manchester. Around 30 cars showed up, along with Instagramers, and was good fun. Much noise and smoke was produced. @Autobant has said that it was a good start and basis for future events. We will be keeping an eye out for developments.

MUSTANG GETS 2 STARS FROM EURO NCAP

The current Ford Mustang only received 2 Stars from Euro NCAP during safety testing. Which is a bit of a shock as cars generally get four to five. However, as Ford pointed out, there is more to this than that headline. In the US it has done well in similar testing. There are some obvious reasons, such as a lack of active safety features like Forward Collision Warning etc. But front airbags not inflating fully enough is harder to explain. Ford will be making improvements and adding features soon. To read more click here.

PAINT TAX

Parkers have investigated paint options for new cars, pointing out something we have noticed, which is that most companies only give one “free” colour option. Everything else costs extra. To read more click here.

SHOULD LORRIES USE HGV-ONLY SAT-NAVS

The Local Government Association has demanded that lorries only use sat-navs designed specifically for them so low bridges can be avoided. As Alan points out it will be difficult to police and is ultimately the responsibility of the driver to know their height and pay attention to sign posts. To read more click here.

SHELL TO INSTALL ELECTRIC CHARGERS AT PETROL STATIONS

Shell announced that they will be installing charging points across Europe and the UK. This allowed Andrew and Alan to discuss more general business advantages for installing different types of charging points in different locations. To read more click here.

UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCES OF AUTONOMOUS CARS

Andrew came across this long read article that discussed a few points that hadn’t been discussed yet, the probable behaviour of owners and pedestrians. There is also a section about how silly the ‘moral dilemma’ discussion is. Of further note is the call not to refer to the story-telling device used by Asimov to help the plot of his novel which is the 3-Laws of Robotics. Please stop, it is silly and irrelevant as it is FICTIONAL! To read more click here.

SELF-PROMOTION SPOT

We noticed that Autocar is starting a long term test of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell. On this show, it is not often that we get in there slightly ahead of the bigger outlets. If you remember, Alan spent a weekend with it, to hear more click on this link. He also had a quick drive at the SMMT Test Day, which is where he got the urge to try it for longer, to hear about that click here. To read Jim Holder’s article click here.
