Amazingly, this week there is no follow-up! So straight into the new news.
NOVEMBER NEW REGISTRATION FIGURES
Another month another increase, this time of 2.9%. That is outside Alan’s “rounding error” rule of thumb, so we can accept it at face value! Once again the premium brands did well. To see more click here.
DIESEL PLEDGE IN FOUR CITIES
Paris, Mexico City, Athens and Madrid leaders have pledged to ban diesel vehicles from their cities by 2025. We will have to wait to see if they actually follow this through. Cynicism may have been deployed during this segment. To read more click here.
NEW ASTON MARTIN APPOINTMENT
Maximillian Szwaj, who was formerly the head of innovation and body engineering for Ferrari and Maserati, will be the chief technical officer. As Alan says, he will be very busy from the start! We would also like to apologise Mr Szwaj for Alan’s complete inability to pronounce his name! To read more click here.
VW REVEAL MOIA
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest Group brand, with the “mobility” entity Moia. Words such as “ride-hailing”, “car pooling” and “mobility” have been heavily used yet little substance has revealed. Andrew asks the question, due to the lack of detail, about recent VW announcements which seem to be rushed out to try and show positive movement in the wake of #DieselGate. To read more click here.
APPLE CAR REVEALED, MAYBE
A letter to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from Apple’s director of product integrity Steve Kenner, has been leaped on by many to say “Apple iCar is a thing!”. In the letter, the case is made for new comers to the automotive field are treated the same as the established players. This prompts the chaps to ask whether this is in reaction to Comma.ai being sent a letter that some feel is asking for more detail than others have been asked to date. To read more click here.
SPEED BUMPS TEACH PEOPLE TO READ
National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released a report discussing clean air. In it, traffic calming measures were discussed and it was recommended to “consider” how these are designed and implemented. That was interpreted as BAN ALL THE SPEED BUMPS! All very silly. To read a typical article on the report click here, if you fancy some actual facts and not hysteria click here.
DANGEROUS DRIVING PUNISHMENTS
The government is considering changing the punishment for those who kill people by dangerous driving. Life imprisonment may be the ultimate sentencing. Andrew and Alan are cautious in welcoming this, as speed is one of the major factors this will be judged by. Speed is a very broad brush that is mentioned when discussing dangerous driving, but it is easy to quantify which is why it is used. Idiocy is harder to measure. To read more click here.
MOT CONSULTATION OVER
Friend of the show Graham Eason has a post about his fears following the ending of the consultation on exempting older vehicles from MOTs. This show has been a supporter of Graham’s campaign as this is a stupid and dangerous idea. To read more click here.
